Keeping up with your vaccinations is an important part of staying healthy, especially with flu season not far away. But we understand that it can be overwhelming to know which immunizations for adults you need and where to go to get them done. That’s why we have created this helpful guide!
Why Are Immunizations Important?
Vaccines continue to save lives every year, preventing the risk of infectious diseases spreading throughout communities. Life-threatening diseases are still very much a threat, however, so staying up to date with your immunizations is critical for not just keeping you safe but also protecting your family and those around you. Most of these illnesses are preventable, as long as everyone does their part!
Recommended Immunizations for Adults
Most notably, annual flu vaccines are recommended for everyone aged 19 to 65+, as well as the most current dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Otherwise, immunizations for adults can vary based on your age, health, lifestyle, and other factors. Here are a few of the top CDC-recommended vaccines for adults, when and how often you should get them, and what they protect you from:
- Hepatitis B– those ages 19-59 should be vaccinated for hepatitis B; people over 60 may want to also get theirs if they have risk factors for this disease
- Tdap– protects from lockjaw (tetanus), whooping cough (pertussis), and diphtheria; a booster is recommended every 10 years for all adults
- HPV– individuals 45 and younger are recommended to get this immunization to protect against certain types of cancer
- MMR– protects against measles, mumps, and rubella; suggested for those under 66 years of age
- Shingles– those under 50 can still get the shingles vaccine; however, it’s highly recommended for those over 50 years old
- Pneumococcal– another immunization recommended for those over 65 to protect against pneumonia; those under 65 may also want to consider getting this one
- RSV– adults over 60 should protect themselves from this respiratory virus, and pregnant women should also get this vaccine if pregnant during RSV season
Meningococcal, hepatitis A, Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b), and Mpox are a few more immunizations to ask your doctor about whether you should get them or not. Many of these depend on your personal health and previous vaccinations.
